You can get some stuff called salt away. You hook it up to you muff with the hose and it helps flush out the motor. Does a good job getting the salt out & supposedly treats the metal too.

Dave F.-
I never heard of the product salt out, sounds pretty cool.

As to bilge reefer, replace the tstat every other year at least. The price of tstat is much cheaper than fixing a blown powerhead. Do the same for the water pump as well

You can problay search here at iboats and find it. It's kind of like the lawn fertilzers that you add dry stuff to and hook up to your hose. It comes with a little bottle that hooks up to the hose. You put the solution into the bottle and flush your motor with it. I use it after each outing

Here's a link

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...*=094267739&view_id=21160&search_type=keyword

"Saltaway" (any boat place sells it), does NOT remove salt....it neutralizes its effects. Once a motor in salt, the corrosion begins. And continues. Not much ya can do. I use it in my motors when I put them away for the winter, but just flush with fresh water if I will use it again soon. And I took an old salted out head from a neighbors Johnson, let it soak in Saltaway (double strength) for a week, and no diff whatsoever. You need to start out with good metal for it to work properly.

Much of what shows up in the cooling systems of outboards is not sodium chloride, or sea salt, but calcium and other materials. Frequent flushing with clean fresh water helps to get rid of it.

Once it builds up, the best way to clean it is to remove the heads and clean them with straight muriatic acid, available at hardware stores.

This is an extremely caustic acid and should be used with care, but it will remove the build-up. Once removed, you need to neutralize with baking soda and wash thoroughly.

Avoid contact with stainless parts and paint. Wear eye protection and keep the baking soda nearby to put on any splashes.

Excessive buildup not only restricts the flow of water, but insulates, preventing proper cooling.
