1988 15hp Johnson J15RCCS.
I removed the pull starter to work on the carb.
Now when I reinstall and tighten down the bolt it binds when pulling if I tightened all the way.
I even tried a different pull starter. Same, same.
Any pics of the unit? Is there a washer/ spacer on the bottom of the housing?
I looked up the parts diagrams and they don't show a spacer..
Thanks,Jerry

There's a tab on the bottom of the recoil 'cup' that fits to a hole when mounting recoil. If it's not lined up, it'll bind like yours is now. Or missing the washer between spring and cup^

Good luck!

There's a pulley to screw washer on top, and a cup washer down at the base. Recall the bottom assembly (cup and guide) has to be oriented properly -- That smaller tang is on the right side as you are facing the motor. The red plastic pawl sits inboard of it, while the end of the spring is anchored outside of it. There's probably a pic of the assembly on Leeroys site, likely the 9.9/15 page somewhere.

may be just me, but I've found it easier to fool with that particular starter set up when the flywheel is removed and you don't have to "slide it" into place

Why would I remove the flywheel??Just more work.
The washer had slipped over to the side.

This has been one of those NIGHTMARE jobs.

My neighbor buys a motor for his 12 ft. alum. boat.
Guy(original owner) says it's running GREAT!!!! not.

Calls me and says it starts and then misses and dies.
Starts and dies again and again.

Start with new impeller and oil change.$25 for parts and shipping
Not pumping water real good.

Needed to change the throttle cable.$75

Then it looses spark. New pack.$75

Rebuild fuel pump(probably the original problem) $25

Then I notice the air screw cover was cracked, sucking air. (cheap bakelite) $85

The float bowl was also cracked.(again cheap bakelite) $25

He bought it knowing the kingpin bushing were bad. I'm not working on that right now.

Not sure what he paid for this motor but it's a pretty expensive fix. $300+ part and $$$ labor??

Thanks for the help.

yeah, neighbor's boat. You will contribute $1,000 in work (shop equivalent rates -- should have an acronym for that: SER). Kid will take it out the first time and bust the return spring.

The starter assembly should work smoothly while holding it in your hand ( need a 5/16(?) nut on the bolt to temporarily hold it together, as you probably did.) Sounds like you have it working now. For what it's worth, I have trouble with that thing sometimes, and other times slick and easy -- think it must simply be a matter of aligning it correctly (or not).

Once I slid the hidden washer to the right spot it worked great.
Thanks all.

IF??? he had taken it to a shop close to 11-1200$ for a 300$ motor.

It does not matter !---$50 old motor or new $50,000 boat.----The shop time to work on them is " all brand new "
