Pull Start Cord Ripped off

Hey all, forgive me in advance for not looking thoroughly through previous posts. I've got a few buddies here for the day to go fish (they drove 5 hours last night!) so I'm in a bit of a hurry to get the boat back on the water.

The long and short of it is this: The pull cord for the starter came undone. I've never fooled with pull starts before on outboards or lawn mowers etc. so I'm not sure what it's supposed to look like when properly tied.

I see a post that I could tie the cord to and then just wind it up. Is that what I do? Any pictures would be great!

Thanks everyone.

Digging around I also read something about winding a spring or coil. Do I need to load the spring/coil somehow so the cord pulls itself back? If so, how would I do this?

Thanks again. Ya'll are lifesavers.

Hi Yader,

You really should provide the info about your motor.

Year, HP and serial number.

Good luck, Chuck

Good call.

It is a '78 Mercury 7.5 hp. Serial number is a good question.

Right now we're trying to get tension on the spring.
