does anyone have a proceedure for replacing the spring in a pull starter for a 1980 4.5 Evinrude outboard... Got it apart, but just cannot seem to get it wound up properly to have good tension on the rewind...I also hear a lot of scraping inside the unit now..

Re: Pull Start

Hi, Paul.

Reinstalling a recoil spring needs the hands of a brain surgeon and the patience of Job. Get the spring reinstalled first, then worry about setting the pretension on the rope.

Safety glasses and heavy gloves are a good idea.

My technique is to anchor the inner end of the spring, install the drum and slowly turn it by hand until the spring is fully wound, then anchor the outer end.

To pretension the rope turn the drum one to two turns after fully winding the rope. Then attach the handle.

I hope that makes sense without pictures.

Good luck. :)

Re: Pull Start

I just did it on my 9.9.

Basically the spring comes in a coil larger than has to go in the tub. Ridiculous.

Anyway, I basically just wound the spring tight enough to fit in the tub, anchored the curly end in the slot and fit the plastic starter piece in the other end. Then you can install the starter, and wrap the cord around a few times...pull the cord out and wrap a couple more times.
