My 40hp Big Twin's starter was damaged in an accident. It works, but doesn't look long for this world. This engine has the decompression valves. What years, and maybe other sizes will fit this motor?

Are you and all other drivers strong enough to pull it without the compression relief valves connected? If you are able, it actually will start easier without.

However, to answer the question, the compression relief starter was used on 1958-59 35hp, and 1960-61 40hp. It was gone in 1962, but the housing could be drilled and tapped for it if you are good at getting it straight---not easy to do.

It actually didn't make much difference with it on or off. My aim is to get the engine to start on the fewest possible pulls!! lol

So the starter on a 35hp-40hp will work (bolt on). Just those years (58-61), or will others work? It looks like something fell on this motor, or it fell over. The cover was damaged, and the starter (gear?) was bent. Everything else good.
