Pull Starter Issue

Hi gang,

Pulled the starter cord on my old (1968) 9.5 hp seahorse, felt a bit of a snap, and it didn’t retract. It just freespools back and forth. Looks like I lost the “roll pin” inside the stater assembly.

I’ve seen lots of videos on rewinding the recoil starter but not how to replace the pin.

Anyone have any experience with this? Where can I get a replacement pin?

Thanks!

Nathan

From any Johnson or Evinrude dealer. You could also try this site right here.

Thanks. Didn’t know if it’s a specialized part or something I could pick up at the local hardware store. Our cabin is kinda remote and not a lot of options for parts dealers.

If it's a roll pin and you have all the pieces you may be able to match it up at a local parts house or hardware store.

Update: Couldn't find the right sized roll pin. The local marina set me up with one but it was the wrong size.

Used a cotter pin as a temporary fix. Now to find the right sized roll pin before next spring. Thanks for the help, guys. Learned a couple new things including how to rewind the pull starter.

Cheers
