The pull starter on my 1960 Johnson seahorse 18 is not catching the flywheel as early as it should be, As in its pulling to far out to catch and start the engine.

I did have the problem before where the starter wasn't catching the f/w at all so I pulled it off and sprayed anything that moved with a silicone lubricate and that seamed to do it but it never did catch the f/w as soon as it did before.

There is a spec in the manual for the proper pull rope length. Not sure what it is off the top of my head, but the point being the rope length is given so that the pulley is positioned in such a way that the rocker catches the flywheel sooner. Replace the rope with one of the proper length, and as long as the rocker is operating properly, you should notice a difference...

Yes, there actually is timing in the pull starter in that you want the pawl to pop out and engage the flywheel at the right time and thus the rope not come out too far. If you look on the bottom of the pull starter there is a mark there and an arrow than must line up for the proper pull start timing. As well as Chinewalker said, the rope must be the right length which is 70 3/16" of 7/32" rope.

The rope in the starter is the original, so I assume it is the correct length on width
