Today i pulled the cylinder head before throwing more money at the motor.
I unscrewed the head bolts and after i pulled the heaoff -two of the bolt holes had an excess of oil in them. Is that normal -As far as the the rest of the procedure all looks ok to the untrained eye. ill post a fewpics when i get the battery charged on the camera . any thoughts would be appreciated.

Pics would be nice. Sounds like you have an issue, but not sure what direction to go. What is the engine history, and what are the problem symptoms and suspicions...

Re: Pulled cylinder head have a few questions

had an oil blowout from the pan gasket while under way probably due to an overheat situation. or possibly bad relief valve on oil pump. after said blowout she was gaetting on plane and bogging to the dock.
pulling the engine apart to see if its worth dealing with ill get some pics in a few minutes.

Ayuh,... That's Not at all unusual for a normal tear down....
Fluids flow every which way, that's why a thorough Cleaning is so important....

I'm no expert, but that doesn't look too good. The rust in particular...but even the carbon build up or whatever that is. I would think that's done some damage to the rings/cylinder walls, or sumpin...
Now I'm curious to see what the pros say...

Good luck with it !

Re: Pulled cylinder head have a few questions

Oil Blowout from the pan gasket would only be caused by a major increase in crankcase pressure as far as I know. I suspect that you need a new set of rings. I would be that you got oil blowby in a cylinder due to failed rings.

Re: Pulled cylinder head have a few questions

boil the block, new cam bearings, new core plugs, hone cylinders, new pistons, re-condition crank and rod journals,, new rings, bearings, re-condition the heads, full gasket set,
This is for a 350 : $1400.00 Ryan Machine, Matawan NJ.
Previous job was a set of 350 heads to be surfaced, valve job, gasket set $350.00
If it needs pistons and a re-bore add about $60.00 per hole + the cost of new pistons.
The 4 might be a bit less ,check with your local shops.

Where in the OP's post did you get to this from?

to the OP. No time like the present to go through it and make her new again.
From the pics shes a little tired. But since your here you may as well go the full route.

This was my initial thought after viewing the engine pics. Like Bondo said, it looks "tired", but from what I can see, it's service-able.

Re: Pulled cylinder head have a few questions

hey guys i have been looking at some othe online rebuild kits -there arent that many and i have a quick question. My engine has timing gears not a chain . #1 the gears look mint and i was thinking could i just reuse them being that most of the kits seem to come with the timing chain. and would you be able to use the timing chain being that it was originally a gear? Thanks for all the feedback
I am going to take the engine to a mmachine shop and have some work done -thanks guys

Ayuh,... I donno what Kits you were looking at, the 3.0l is built with Only timing Gears....
Timing Chains are for the V-motors...

Take it to the Machine Shop for their opinion,....
Many or most Machine Shops would rather sell you the Package, rather than using owner supplied parts in these cases...
They have Suppliers,+ make a small mark-up...But can still make an attractive Package job...

The Machinest will also Know whether the timing gears, or whatever else is still Servicable....
Instead of walking in, Telling them what you want,...
Go in asking what you Need....

Re: Pulled cylinder head have a few questions

Cylinder #2 in the last pic looks like there are a bunch of rust marks down the cylinder, I'd go for the complete rebuild so you know everything is 100%.

When I rebuilt my 3.0 it cost about $8-900, $400 for a complete engine kit and $400-450 for machine work. I assembled the engine, but I think the machine shop said they charge somewhere around $200 to assemble an engine.

I do agree that your machine shop is going to give you the best recommendation, just choose the shop wisely.

Re: Pulled cylinder head have a few questions

great advice guys I m going to go in to the machine shop and ask for their expertise instead of telling them what i want. Everyone has been terrific on this site. Thanks for all the great advice and ill update the thread after i go the shop. by the way when i go to the shop should i disassemble everything from the block or should i go in with it the way it is with everythiing intact?
