I am new to I/O boating. My previous boat had outboard motor and when I pulled it up to an island on the lake I just pulled the motor up and no probs. With my I/O I raise it up as far as it will go like I am putting it in on a trailer and still part of it sits on the bottom. I was kind of worried so I did not leave it on shore and anchored it far enough off so the outboard did not sit on the bottom. Is that something I should worry about in the future or is it ok to pull it and let part of the motor sit on the bottom?

Also with my outboard it did not have alternator/generator so I always took the battery out and charged it over the week so it woudl be ready for the weekend. With the inboard I have a marine battery and it charges the battery but I was wondering if I let it sit over the week if one weekend when I take it out what are the chances the battery will lose it charge?
Thanks in advance.

an outboard charges the battery, too. You shouldn't have to take it out and/or charge during the week.

NO do not let it bang off the bottom. It will weaken the transom over time and just beat the outdrive in general. I would also keep it as deep as I could so that the sand it not constantly being sucked into the impellar, outboard or I/O.Pull in fairly close,as boat is coasting towrads shore raise out drive and throw stern anchor over, that will be your brake, make sure line is wrapped 1/2 around a cleat as that will absorb most of the breaking of the boat. Let your people out near shore then walk boat out a bit and anchor.Older outboards alternators sucked.Your I/O is the same as a car except for the spark screens in them that is USCG required. It will keep battery charged untill your next trip.

I beach my boat on sand, pull it up on the beach by hand, toss the anchor on the shore, then I trim the outdrive down into the sand just enough to keep the stern straight. If there are rocks or I can't see the bottom I hop off the bow before we reach the shore to check it out first. Sand doesn't bother me, rocks do. lol!

My attitude is that there is whole lot more stress and strain with 140 - 750 plus hp in forward and reverse on that transom than a little rubbing in the sand. Call me an idiot, but that is waaaaay more of an issue. I am not recommending that anyone be abusive with their stuff, but think it through a little. One thing to always check though is your Gimbal Ring torque. Needs to be watched and this is an area that might aggravate a wearing ring.

You should not have to charge your battery every week. I usually use my boat every other day, but on the rare occasion that is sits for a week, the battery has always been fine. I would not worry about it sitting in a little bit of sand, however watch out for rocks. I would think that the skeg is the only part actually in the sand. Just go in slow and coast the last few feet, don?t want to hit anything hard. A lot of the times if I think I will scrap the bottom I stop the boat off shore, jump in and pull the boat up by hand.

If your boat is fiberglass, running it up on shore in the nice smooth sand is like taking sandpaper to your hull with a couple hundred pounds of force sanding your bottom for you. Over time, it WILL take the finish and then the gel coat off.

The out drive on the bottom? Bouncing up and down is NOT good for the gimbal ring nor the mounts.
Out drive are not cheap to repair or to replace so why not just take care of them?

Back the boat in, throw the anchor out far enough to make for a good hold and then stop it when your out drive is just off the bottom. Tilt it up and/or put in trailer position and turn it AWAY from the ladder. That's just in case you slip, you don't cram your foot onto one of the blades. It will happen given enough time or beer.
Anchor the stern to shore and you have a nice steady, non-swinging platform!:)

I have heard good things about this product, but do not own one. Think I may pick one up this year and try it out. Anyone have an Anchor Buddy. Could not find this on iboats or I would of posted that link. I also do not beach my boat. I prefer to anchor out where its afloat.

haha I liked the end statement on the video. It's like having a rubberband on your boat haha

Personally, my boat is 13 years old, it's been beached it's whole life in this manner (my father was the previous owner) with no ill effects other than some sanded gelcoat on the keel. When the keel gets bad enough I'll re-gel that area and stick a keel guard over it. I'm not saving the boat for anyone. If it were a new boat I certainly wouldn't beach it, but then again, I wouldn't own a new boat because I'd be too worried about it getting "used".

an outboard charges the battery, too. You shouldn't have to take it out and/or charge during the week.

One slight side note here...

It really depends on how you use the boat. Let's say for a minute you are running a single battery system. Every weekend you cruise to your favorite spot ten minutes from the dock, anchor up for the afternoon and listen to some toons, blow up the inflatable toys, and plug every imaginable accessory into your cigarette lighter....the ten minute trip out and back will not be enough to top off a significantly discharged battery.

If, on the other hand, you have the motor running for the majority of your time on the water and you don't overload the battery, you are probably fine. Before removing the battery every weekend, I would consider a permanent mount marine charger. Guest makes a nice one for about $100 including a shore power cord (if you keep her slipped).

I've used anchor buddy for last 10 yrs at campsites to leave boat in deeper water over night. The lake we camp at has everything from small gravel to fairly large (1' diameter) rocks so I would not beach boat overnight. The bottom of our previous 10yr old Glastron looked almost new thanks to the anchor buddy!
