About to start pulling the motor in the 94 VIP with ta 240hp 5.7l Yamaha. I haven't pulled an inboard before, but am very comfortable with pulling and replacing motors in cars and trucks. The biggest question that I have is how does the flywheel seperate from the driveshaft? Will I need to loosen the lower unit or can I simply slide the motor forward? Thanks in advance.

Re: Pulling motor

You are going to get a lot of responses with this one but you will need to pull the outdrive first

Re: Pulling motor

It's actually a lot easier than a car. Pull the outdrive, then remove the 4 mount bolts (after removing everything else that is connected), 2 main engine mounts and 2 large bolts that sit vertical on flywheel housing, careful because they have fabric washiners in them and nuts on the bottom.

How are u pulling it out of the boat? When we did ours we used a crane truck :) which worked pretty well.

DavidWilliams,I don't think Yamaha still makes an outdrive, but it sounds like you have an inboard ? ?
On inboards there is a flange you unbolt.

SternDrives you remove.

Then you pull the motor.

DHP

DHPMARINE I think you are right! I am not quite as literate with the marine terminology. Where is the flange? Is it the one that looks like a bell housing or is it further back toward the stern?

Re: Pulling motor

first thing ya gotta get is a service manual. second thing is forget anythging ya know about cars when working on a boat, and throw away the silicone seal. the yamaha is very similar to a cobra unit. remove the drive. on the front mounts you can either remove the lag bolts holding the mount to the stringer or remove the mount stud nut. remove the aft mount bolts at the ears on the bell housing. remove fuel and accessories as required to seperate the engine from the hull. but a service manual will be most helpful. that is one place where the marine industry is similar to the auto industry. lots of manuals but techs never look at them.

Cool, going to start taking pics of all the wiring just in case there is a problem hooking all back up. Will pull all the cowls and seats to make room to work.

Re: Pulling motor

I guess what I don't understand is which part exactly is the outdrive?
That's the "Thing" sticking out the back of the boat,.. With a Prop mounted to it.........
In the Tiny 2nd photo you posted......

Re: Pulling motor

I am not trying to be smart but if you do not know how to pull the outdrive then you probably should have some help pulling the motor or get the manuals and study them beforehand. If it were a mercruiser you would remove the six nuts on the face and undo the arms, put the boat in forward and slide it off the bolts
