Hi to all. I have a 94 Rinker open bow with a 94 4.3l v6 mercruiser. I think I have a bad flywheel- teeth ground down in a few spots. My question is, should I pull the motor myself and replace the ring gear or the flywheel. Whichever it needs. Or should I let my local maring shop do it? I have changed a few motors in my time and am quite capable of doing this mechanical wise. The thing that worried me is the realignment of the motor and drive at the reinstall. Can I mark eveything with tape/markers to make sure I put everything exactly in the same spot or is this not possible? I will be the first to say that I don't know how to do that and would worry that I would get them mis aligned. What is the consensus on that?

I pulled a 350 out of my boat last fall, did a complete 383 stroker rebuild with the same block (when I took the motor mounts off I was careful not to adjust them), put the mounts back on, and it lined right up when I installed it back in the boat. You can pull it yourself and just keep the motor mounts bolted to the block while you do your work. It should line back up when it goes in. Worst case scenario, if it doesn't align when you put it back in and you can't get it right, bring it to your to the shop and they'll align it for you. No need to pay them to pull a motor if you can do it yourself.
