I have new twin Merc 350's with Alpha 1 drives. this is the first I/O purchase. This year I did not remove the drives. What should I do besides replace the drive oil and apply grease to grease fittings? I plan every other year to take the drives off to get them serviced. Is this a bad practice? Should they come off every year?

Pull them off at least every 100 hours of use.

Re: Pulling the Outdrive

I would recommend pulling the drives each and every year.there is a lot of servicing and inspecting to be done when the drives are off.If i read your post right you just got the boat???I would pull the drives this year if that is the case so you can see what youve got.If you ever had a water leak in the drive shaft boot and you did not pull the drive that year, you would be in for a rude awakening the next spring on launch day.Charlie

The first thing you should do is go get a manual for your setup. Seloc and Clymer both produce good manuals. Follow the advice above and you'll be fine. You should also pull the props and grease the shaft yearly.

Good luck.

Jeremy

Charlie right on the mark, plus if you keep the boat in the water all season it is good to pull drives at the end of each season, and remove props also, this will help keep things from seizing up, If it is a trailer boat then every 100 hrs is good or at least every second year, drive oil should be changed at the end of every season.

Thank you for all of your responses. The boat I was referring to is a 30' Chaparral Signature series. Have a great Holiday.

Thanks,

Dave (Bones on the Bay)
