im sorry if this is a dumb question but i know nothing about out boards. i have noticed that the motor will miss and sometimes will fail to start and other times run great. i have also noticed that my primer bulb will be de flated or other times soft. are they always supposed to be hard or just at certain rpm's? Does this sound like a bad bulb? When i pump to prime it when i first get on the water it never gets real firm, is it supposed to? any advise will be appreciated.

Re: pump bulb collapsed

Be sure you open the vent valve sufficiently on your fuel tank. The bulb being defalted indicates the motor may be pulling a vacuum on the tank, lines and bulb. The bulb should get firm as you pump to prime. It could be one of two things. A fuel pump with a bad diaphragm, or a carburetor float that is not set properly.
If the float is set too high, then your pumping to prime will create a overly rich fuel mixture which could explain the failure to start. Faulty float setting on the carb can also cause the engine to miss due to flooding condition.
You didn't say what horsepower or year the motor is. Check your fuel tank vent, then rebuild the fuel pump (about $10.00), then check the float setting in the carburetor. One of these is bound to be the problem (fingers crossed). Did I mention purchasing a good manual for your motor is a good idea if you don't have one?

Would not hurt to also buy a new hose and bulb. They don't last forever.

I agree with docdoc make sure the vent is opened up on the gas tank for the deflation and if it never gets real firm its probably the inlet needle and seat in the carb do you ever see fuel pouring out of the carb?
