I just got my tilt/trim motor 852928 an hooked it up but the pump is not really working it sputters out a tiny bit of fluid. Is there a replacment pump only that I can buy? Also I need a solenoid for the up trim since its not working.

Re: Pump for 852928 tilt trim motor

I am wondering if I ordered the wrong motor, I have a 290 volvo out drive. It seems like the shaft on this motor is 1/8th of an inch too short. I dont think it seats into the pump properly.

Is there a way to test the pump itself just to make sure its not bad?

If the four mounting ears line up with your new motor then they fit together. The other valve body is 3-3/4" diamter and won't even fit into the reservoir opening.

You need to put the new motor upside down into a vice. instead of rolling the oring into place stretch it and push it down without any twists. twisted orings will try to roll up into the space between geer plate and lower casting. dry fit the valve body by puting into place and gently spinning. when the pump gears line up with armature then you will feel the valve body drop about 1/16". Once you are confident, take the valve body off and fill the reservoir with fluid 1" below lip. fit valve body, spin into gear, install four mounting screws.

you don't want to buy the new valve body if you can avoid it. the quality is really bad. the aluminum has the strength of pot-metal and will easily crack. The rubber is very low grade and swells almost immediately. If you have the time to wait, look on ebay for a rebuild service or search the ibaots "Force" forums for threads regarding valve body repair. You can cull the critical seal from a pair of briggs & stratton carberator kits. The local hydraulics shop can provide the rest of the seals needed to do a home repair. However, be advised that it is hard to take apart and the internal springs may come out before you can see where they went. The quality of oem rebuild is 10x better than new aftermarket but it is not a friendly project.

Re: Pump for 852928 tilt trim motor

I just realized that the new motor shaft is too short by about 1/4 inch mabye more. I need a new pump now because two of the mounting tabs broke off amd one of the remaining two feels like its about to go too. It might be aftermarket, when i looked at the metal it had the consistancy of poor quality pot metal.

Hmm. yeah, i think you need a new motor too. The armature is squared off at the tip. Inside the pump a drive gear has a matching squared recess. If the armature and the gear are not lined up then the armature does not drop into the recess. if you tighten the mounting screws like this then it causes two problems. The first and most common problem is that it drives the armature into the upper bearing and pushes up the whole motor shaft. Sometimes the motor can be fixed with shims. The second and less common problem is that the mounting ears snap off on pump. Having a low quality aftermarket pump makes it more likely to snap off the ears.

Anything under $200 new is the cheap pump. some people sell it for $90 and some people sell it for $160. Still the same pump. The mallory linked above looks like good quality. You can tell because of the end plugs. The good ones use retaining clips and the cheap one use allen key. At this point you have three options -
1) buy the mallory linked above and be done with it for the next 20 years
2) buy the whole cheap $160 pump+motor off ebay and don't take it apart for any reason ever. You'll probably need to replace it every 3-4 seasons but the price is disposable.
3) search ebay and craigslist for a used one that can be rebuilt. your pump with broken ears can not be rebuilt. A properly rebuilt oem is actually more durable than original due to newer types of rubber.
