Re: purchase and age of black max

The first year year for 150 Black Max engines was 1978 that would be quite old for salt water or even fresh water that was used regularly. Then new they weren't a bad engine, a little smokey at idle. They main thing with a engine of that age is MAINTANCE, if it was well maintaned it could be a great engine if not it's probably JUNK

Re: purchase and age of black max

I have a 1982 150 black max on a 20' 5" Penn Yan Explorer (8' beam). It is a heavy boat. The boat cruises comfortably at 25 mph and tops out at 40. I don't know how it compares to your boat, boat it is a point of reference for you.

I believe production of it ran through the early 90's.
