I have a 1971 Evinrude 50 h.p. Evinrude, ArrowGlass Phantom. My question is I bought the boat it had a three button select switch at the rear of the throttle lever when I went to pick up the boat the three buttons were missing I was told it was stolen. So now I need help in finding a replacement I am told is slim to none, I have been to dealerships and it cant be ordered. So any one with any help in solving the problem please help. I am told that a toggle switch will work and I have found two of them of different types I dont know which to use if it will work, one is a Spdt and the other is Dpdt., both switches offered through iboats. But I am searching for help first anyone one having a switch for sale and price with shipping and the schematics of hooking it up all the wires are there. SECONDLY: I have no key to the ignition that too was stolen so it is all hooked up except one gray wire that looks as if it never was hooked up does anyone have the schematics for the ignition switch even a photo copy of both problems I mentioned, will help. I will pay for the copies and Please responde as to first having a switch for sale or will the toggle switch be sufficient Please reply to mountainboy@peoplepc.com

Re: Push Button Selectric Switch

I just looked in the Clymer manual but couldn't find a 1971 50 hp listed in the wiring diagrams. I'm not positive about this, but it could be like the '71 60 hp.
With no power applied, does the prop spin freely or is it engaged?

If engaged, I have a selector switch here I won't be using that may work for you. In this case power to the green wire disengages the clutch and power to the blue shifts into reverse. (Don't take all this as gospel, as I'm not an expert and it's way past my bedtime.)

If it spins free then a toggle switch would work fine. In this case the green is forward and the blue is reverse. I'm looking for one of these selectors (found one but don't have the money this week :( ).

The gray wire appears to be the tachometer lead (tach ground on older models).

Re: Push Button Selectric Switch

Thank you for you reply..the title shows 1971 50hp Evinrude I am new to this boat at present the propellor will not turn a full turn just from one point and catches then I can turn it back to the position it came from. I talk to a dealership maintaince dept., and he said the last ones of the push buttons were made in 1989 but the toggle switch will work I needed a Dpdt double polarity double thrust type switch is this true as to what you know...I am searching for information now before I sink alot of money in parts and only one item works I can't take the rest back if you understand. Can you photo copy the schematics of the ignition switch and a copy of the push button switch as email it to mountainboy@peoplepc.com or let me know you can mail it to LeRoy Barksdale 192 Sable Road Evington Virginia 24550...I will pay you for your time and trouble. I do appreciate your help on this. I see iboats offer manuals but I am not clear if it covers all aspects or just the motor. If all aspects then I can order one and it should have the schematics but its like you said if I dont have the right information and it is not shown in the book I have a book I cant use or return for the correct book. Sorry to keep you up so late but I will keep in touch as I need this information. THANKS!
