I changed the water pump in my 1983 2.8 Starcraft. It has a omc 400 sterndrive. And the old one was in great shape. I was not getting water up to the motor so I thought thats what it was. Now I am still not getting water to the motor. Does anyone have a Idea of what could be the problem?????????

is this issue while the boat is in the lake?
if not, what is your setup for supplying water?
does the drive work fine otherwise?

what is a 2.8 Starcraft?

When you say water pump, are you talking about the engine water pump, or the impeller?

Im not familiar with your boat, but on mine, the motor has a pump, and the stern has an impeller, if I can't get water to the pump I know its the impeller.

I`m sorry. Its a 2.5L starcraft. And Its the impeller that I changed and the housing. I backed it in the lake and ran it. And it got hot. I put muffs on it pulled the hose going to the motor from the out drive. Turned on the water and started it. Alittle water came out then stopped.

Here is a picture video I made of all the work I did on this boat over the winter. So I realy need to get this water to the motor issue fixed so I can enjoy all the hard work I put in.

I think theres a 3/4" hose that comes in from the outdrive to to motor? Is there water to that point?

have heard of people putting the water director plates on wrong and blocking the holes when reinstalling a stringer outdrive
another recently had hornets mudding up the passage through the intermediate while the boat was stored with the drive off

I tried back flushing it thru the hose. And I get water coming out the vents at the bottom. And it comes out alittle pee hole at the top of the drive.

There was a batch of GLM impellers that had the brass inserts not well bonded to the rubber...were spinning in the rubber..... but that was 7 or 8 years ago - but maybe got an old stock one?
maybe the impeller key sheared.
How did the w/p shaft splines look? what type of grease did you use?
just guessing now

Re: Put in a new water pump. Still not getting water.

I work part time in a shop for a guy that buys project boats and fixes them from the trailer up. Like I did on mine on the weekends. Then resales them. When I was working on his stuff, he pulled my lower unit and repacled the impeller and housing for me. I saw he had a can of a blueish grease he was useing. And the pin was new. He even said that the pump that was in it looked to be in great shape. So maybe there is some kind of blockage. And the last owner thought it was the impeller and had it replaced. And that was`nt the problem. I guess I will keep trying to flush it out some more. Before I have to take it back to the shop and tear it down again. All this lower unit oil is starting to cost me. $$$$

ok, so you didn't do any of the work. so you didn't see if the splines were any good, or the key was installed, or anything much.... the only way you will have any idea for sure is to do the work yourself. that's the world of boating.

Lower unit oil?
You do not need to drain the lower unit to change the water pump impeller. Only the upper gearbox needs to be drained. You can save the oil in a clean container if you are careful and it is new oil.

No I did`nt do the work. The guy that I work for that owns the boat shop and knows alot more then me did it. And he said everything looked great. The one in it was`nt even worn. I saw the splines. They were good, and the whole kit I bought with the key was installed. I work for the guy and he is a friend. He made sure it was done right. But anyways. I have been flushing it out. I pulled the hose, turned on the water and started it. I`m getting water. Its not alot of water but it is running out of the hose. Would it get more water in the lake? And it is still getting hot. I changed the thermastat. Could that not be working right? It said it was for a omc 160 degree. It just looked different from the one that came out.

He made sure it was done right.
remove the supply hose to the thermostat housing. back the trailer into the lake until the boat is floating. Lower the drive and start the engine
if it was done right, water will be coming out the hose like the fountains at the Bellagio

Otherwise, it was not done right.

Re: Put in a new water pump. Still not getting water.

Ok. Thanks guys. I did find another thing that maybe a cause. When back flushing it. I saw water running down the side of the drive. I looked. And the water line going into the transom was leaking out pretty go with the water presure on it. And when I had it in the water. I saw it bubbling in that area. So I know that I have to fix that leak. And then I maybe getting enough water. Lets hope. Because it is pumping. Just not alot. So I`ll fix that and put it in the water and see how we are. I let you know. Thanks again.

Re: Put in a new water pump. Still not getting water.

Well. I took it all back apart. Flushed it all out when it was apart. I checked everything and it looked good. I only found one way the pump holes would line up to get the bolts in. So I`m not sure the water direction plates are right. Where should they be? And I am getting water, but its not coming out alot. Could that be the plates not in right. And if so I will have to take it apart again. But like I said. Where should they be set at?????
