Put outboard in gear with rpm too high

Good afternoon everybody!

I own a little 16ft aluminium boat with yamaha 9.9 four strokes.

I lent it to my son this morning, and he told me that instead of shifting into reverse or forward from the lower possible rpm, he tought that start/restart was only for starting it and he rev up to higher rpm before shifting in gear. He told me he was shifting somewhere between 1300rpm (idling is like 800). So, like you can easily imagine, the shifting was very rough at that rpm.

Do you think my son damaging the dog clutch or any other composant by shifting at that rpm instead of shifting at idle?

"welcome: marcel1969 to iboats...

It is hard to tell. Could be there was some minor damage with the gears and clutch dog, but time will prove that out if there was. I would explain to him that you shift at low RPMs and boat on. If there was any issues, you will know shortly, but other then some rough shifting at the higher RPMs I wouldn't worry about it until a problem shows up. I certainly would not disassembly it if it is working okay. JMHO!

How much damage comes down to how gently and slowing he shifted gears. The gentler the shift, the more damage done

I asked him and he told me that he knows for the fact that he needed to shift firmly/fast and so it's what he did.I will see next time if there is some problems with it.Thanks.

Some OB brands shifts as much as 1100 rpm while at idle. If OB is clutching spot on, nothing to worry about having done it at 1300 rpm.

Shifting should one done crisply at lowest possible rpm. Neither dragging it nor jamming it into gear.
Probably no damage at this point.Take it out a see how it seems to shift.
Give it a workout.

A friend of mine clutched a 30 HP at 2.5 K revs while in neutral, bit loud gear sound was heard, combo made a small wheely, gear case is still working spot on after that episode..

Generally shifting 1300 rpm instead of 800rpm won't be a big deal... but it can chip the dog clutch any time you shift. Higher RPM or bad shift technique increases the potential for chipping.

Some of the "fuzz" metal fragments on the magnet when you do each lower end oil change is from normal minor dog clutch chipping. It takes a LOT of the very tiny chips to be a problem. But one bad shift at high rpm can take off a significant chunk instead of a nearly microscopic bit.
