Herself is in the market for a laptop. She has zeroed in on the latest Mac, the MacBook Pro. I'm looking for any input I can get on the Mac line. Seems every one that uses them, loves them. Almost like a cult following. I've herd all the pluses, Bullet proof OS, no viruses, great reliability and so on. It seems as other than the limited option ability and the pricing scale their are no major drawbacks. Are there any other issues I should be aware of? Any information shared will be appreciated. :)

Not sure if this willbe helpfull....

My neighbor is NOT a computer guy, could care less about anything except Email, Word, Excel. He teaches at the community college and uses is computer for those 3 things.

One of the guys in his class raved and raved about the mac laptop, a real mac-head. So he bought it.
I asked him what he thought and he basically said, it makes no difference to him, he had no preference.

So for un-biased opinion, he seemed to like it

Re: Puter Gurus and Mac Users???

i have a mac at home, my girlfriend's. i use pc's all day at work. i've never personally bought a computer since i have one at the office. i think they're all a pain in the rear.

but, the mac works really good. i use if for the basics...email, pics, internet, music shopping. it's a little easier to use than a pc but if you've been using pc's it will just seem different. and, there are some viruses starting to appear.

if i was spending my money, the extra cost for a mac simply isn't justified. i could do everything that i want to do on a pc and save some bucks. they're all junk after a few years anyway.

does that laptop have intel chips? i've read that there aren't too many applications for those machines yet...apple beat developers to the punch by releasing them without warning.

Sounds like she may be a candidate for a Mac.

I like to try new programs often I'm a bit of power user also so that would rule out the Mac for me PC software is widely available and affordable unlike the Mac which has limited software at a much higher price, I have not tried any of the Intel Processors in the new Macs all I have to go on is the IBM processors which are dismal "slow" to say the least.
The Mac people will try to tell you your Pc software will work through emulation don't believe it.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the input, as for "they're all junk after a few years anyway" Yah goes without saying in electronics. The unit does have the new Intel chip so that’s another issue we'll need to explore.

I can tell you a Mac is superior in every which way. If your primary use is to surf the web or word processing, then a WinTel machine is more than suficient. On the other hand if speed, graphic and functionality is what ur after, a Mac is a must.

I do a lot of video editing so a crash proof system is essential. With a Mac Book, I can now edit on the go. I highly recommend it.

Contradicting conventional belief about computers life span, a Mac will last about 7-8 years. You may need to update the system software once or twice.

Suits me fine.

The machine upstairs with the dvd burner is a 2.sumthin gightz with 512ram and it runs xp.

Re: Puter Gurus and Mac Users???

I have been using Macs since 1990, and Apples before that. They have made a few real turkeys but most of their hardware has been rock solid. In all these years, I have had two motherboards go bad (one Apple IIe, I think it was lightening, and one Mac powerbook, might have been dropped). Never had a hard drive crash. Never had to reformat a hard drive that I can remember, other than just to clear one out when I wanted to start up a machine as if new. Just really good stuff. I use them at home and at work, many hours every day, and multiple Macs at work and at home, so this is a pretty good size sample. At work we had one hard drive die, one time. And the Macs generally both last longer and retain their usability longer, so the additional cost on the front end is made up for, usually by a good margin. Software? What do you need. Unless you use odd proprietary software or you are into games, you can do what you need to do on a Mac. All that said, I still tell people "go with your support base" by which I mean that if you aren't able to be your own tech support, and you rely on your neighbor, friend, nephew, whatever, go with the system they know. Of course, I think you won't need as much support with a Mac, but I admit I am biased, and besides, I am my own tech support most of the time! Good luck whatever you do. Functionally they aren't so different these days, largely because PC's now work much more like Macs. Last thought--I don't think I ever met anyone who was passionate about their Windows PC, while Mac users often say they are in love with their computers.
