OK puter guru's out there.....here's one for ya'.

I'm on a DSL server, two puters in the house. One for granddaughter (it's the only way I can get puter time) and one for herself and I. Both hooked up to same service box.

Tuesday, the electric blinks off and on. Course the puter shuts down. Kick it back on and now I can't access the web. The granddaughters is fine. I've checked the address' and all that stuff, did a restore, booted and re-booted and made up a whole new list of discriptive adjectives concerning the state of my puter.

Now this darn thing did this before. And after a while came back on it's own.

Now.....I have a 20oz hammer laying beside the machine. I'm about ready to make some "adjustments". Would anyone like to try and save my puter from "adjustments"? I'm sure it would be most appreciative.

By the way....I'm posting this from my shop. At least this one still works although it's a dial-up connection and slow.

First, unlpug (not just shut off) your computer and your DSL router or ethernet hub (depending on how you are set up you have one or the other)

Then, while unplugged, check all your cables on your computer and the router/hub.

Then power on the router/hub first and give it a minute to fully come on line.

Then plug in and power up your computer.

Hopefully this will re-initialize the set up and get you back up.

If not, check the status lights on your NIC (network interface card) on your computer and the hub/router. Make sure the LED lights are lite on both. If they aren't let me know and we can trouble shoot it.

If this does not work, I need to understand better how you are set up. I really need to know if you are connected through a hub to a dsl modem and use sw to connect to dsl or if you have a router that is hooked up to the modem.

Also, did you have eveyything connected to surge protectors? Sounds like you had a power surge that could have created some problems. If you don't, make sure you go out and buy some and hook them up. Surge protectors are like life jackets, you don't need them until something goes wrong and then it's too late.

i'm on dsl also, mine is wireless and i dont need a dsl modem anymore. but a few months ago i had dsl from the phone company, i had a external dsl modem, and i had the same problem as you! i'd call them and what they would tell me to do was: shut the computer down, unplug the power on the modem, wait a few minutes, start the computer, plug the modem back in.
i went through 5 modems with them, seems the power going out would sometimes kill the modem! thats why i went to wireless.

Re: Puter Is Down Agin

OBJ, there is some good advice here. A lot of surg suppressors are good only for one or two surges depending on the size. If you have any questions, get one with a light that shows the surge suppression is working. Also, there are small UPSs out there (Uninterruptable Power Supplies) that use batteries to keep power to your equipment during a power failure. It lets you shut thigns off in the proper manner without things dying. They are not that expensive and may help you from losing the config or your modem. I have seen this problem before and usually the config and connection are just messed up and a complete power down like was described by Ralph is the best bet to bring it back. Sometimes the company you get you line from can also tell you if your router is making a good connection. Good luck

the hammer and the "adjustment" thingy is actually called an "attitude adjustment" and is only applicable to people you work with :D .......not too good for puters
