Got a nasty message on the screen that said the machine could not boot up because the System32/config foulder has been corrupted. Pops in the XP disc and goes for the repair. But it won't let me log on to the drive.

I've got two hard drives in my machine...C as the master and E as the slave. I loaded XP on the slave also. Would it be possible to swap the master/slave plugs around, boot up on E and maybe copy the config folder on E drive to C drive config folder?

Seems logical...but what do I know or I wouldn't be asking..... :D :D

Re: Puter Problems.....AGAIN!!! (Update)

Yikes!!
Well bub, it's gonna take some work....the decision to follow the procedures outlined in the link to follow are based on how important the files are on the C drive now. It may be easier to wipe and re-install the OS on your C drive. If you have tons of personal files, do the swap of the HD's and copy off all of those important files FIRST. At least get them some place safe before you do anything rash. Physically remove the backup drive from your system so there's no chance to toast your valuable personal files and reload Windows on the C drive. You will of course have to re-install all of the programs and then bring your personal files back to the C drive later.

OK, here's comes the GOOD PART!! After you get back to a normal running system (if there is such a thing when using Windows...)

FYI, go here===> Erunt and get the file called Erunt and Ntregopt. Install both. Erunt will save your butt by backing up the sys32\config folder (it holds your SAM, Software, etc files for just this kind of tragedy). The NTRegopt program optimizes your registry. Windows backup/restore will do squat, use Erunt, it more precise.

Now for the BAD PART ( I warned you earlier...)

Lost ur system32 Config?

As a last thought... Another way....

You could boot from your Windows CD and go thru the steps to install the OS, at one screen ,look for the 'repair' (option) install. It will attempt to repair your existing OS in-place. Jump here Repair Install....., go to about 3/4 down the page and look for "How to Repair Install", heck, it even has pictures!

Good Luck

Re: Puter Problems.....AGAIN!!! (Update)

Thanks TONS, X. I did try the repair option and the darn thing wouldn't pop up the log on. Just wouldn't let me in. We'll try your other options and see what we can do. I got a lot of stuff on the drive....most is copied to disk but some not. We'll let ya' know what's going on or ain't going on... :). Thank heaven the better half has a puter that works.....

Jim

Re: Puter Problems.....AGAIN!!! (Update)

Try the repair install first.
Here is the order of what buttons to push.......enter.....F8.......R!
Enter will be at the first screen, where you enter the recovery console.
Then you hit F8 to agree to the license agreement.
Then hit R to do the repair install.

This usually works to fix a corrupted config problem. A repair install will not erase your personal stuff, it just reinstalls the OS files.
JUST MAKE SURE YOU DON"T FORMAT THE DRIVE!!!!

Re: Puter Problems.....AGAIN!!! (Update)

Got a new puter. :) :) Herself said she felt sorry for me....she's a great kid.... :)

I did manage to get the files off the trashed hard drive. I used the slave as master and rebooted on it and was able to access the files on the trashed HD. I then formatted and reloaded windows in it. Ran OK. The machine seems to be working OK with no bugs or virusis.

But since I'm on the new one now.....I won't need it....so the granddaughter got it. Faster than the one she had and got more RAM and a bigger hard drive.

Thanks guys for the help! :)

By the way vipzach....I tried the repair before swapping over drives and she wouldn't do squat.

Thanks agains!

It was worth a shot, congrats on the new 'puter though. That sounds like a good use for the old one.
