I have a 1980 bass tracker 3 16ft. The engine seems to be a constant issue so i was wondering i will run into any issues if i put a newer 50 horse jet on it. I didnt know if the added weight would make cause any issue. Also i want a tiller handle and would like to remove or move the bait tank. Does the tank provide support

If the hull/transom is solid, and its rated for the given hp, yeah. But I'd make sure its solid before doing it. 1980 could have issues. As far as the bait tank, how about some pics?

Not sure what the '80 model looks like, but if it's the glorified jon boat with front and rear casting decks w/swivel seats you see frequently, I've installed several 40-50hp Honda's on them. They work pretty good!

If you're considering doing a custom, I've seen several center console versions that I find pretty attractive. I have a jon boat style 17' Polar Craft w/side console that might get that treatment some day.

Agree about needing pics for an opinion regarding removing the tank/bait well.

With things being the way they are, might be a great time to tackle a project like that!

Not familiar with your boat.....pictures? Anything spanning the hull, beam to beam is for structural purposes on most boats....like center seats in John Boats. Without a stiff Gunwale, the sides would be talking to you in a chop (probably). You adding a tiller steered engine (if currently remote) with you and weight of a 4 stroker and jet thrust package will put a lot of weight in the stern. 50 is good HP for a 16' and would plane her out nicely, maybe more than your body would like....flat(ish) bottom boat-rough water. when a 9.9 would get her on plane, but between Idle and WOT, there can be some unpleasant bow high attitudes requiring relocation of things forward. A Dole fin-Whales Tail and or trim tabs may be required along with PTT.
