Putting LU back on

i re-sealed my 1968 3.9hp LU and went to put it back on the motor and the shift shaft wasn't lining up right. after manually turning the shaft and shifting at the motor a few times it seated. it was late and i didnt have time to test run it, but i did pull the rope a few times. in each gear...F N R, the rope turned the prop in the same direction. is this right?

no, shift it in neutral, pull lower unit back off and shift lower unit at shift rod into neutral, make sure prop turns freely in both directions then slide lower unit back on. it can take a few times to get it right
