Hello, I am the NEW guy. You can refer to me as newbe, fresh off the boat, rookie, ect. The fact is that my wife and I just bought our first boat and have basically no idea. We repair a lot of stuff with ease so this shouldnt be that much of a chore. The reason that i write is because we are a little puzzled about what we have. We need manuals but can't get them because I don't know the model number of my boat. I know that it is a Bayliner 1989 (1988 on the data plate) capri with an inboard 5.0 litre OMC and an OMC cobra outdrive. There is no other numbers on the boat for a model number other than 1211 under the ladder in the back. It measures 21ft from the front to the back and 24ft including the drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated even if it is just direction to a site. Any tips for the new guy couldn't hurt either. Thanks JK

Re: PUZZLED

KEP, welcome to Iboats. I agree with roscoe. Something I should point out, since this is your first boat, is that boats are an entirely different animal than anything else you own including your car. If you like to do your own maintenance, you have already done the first best thing...you are asking questions on Iboats. The next best thing you are already trying to do (getting a manual for your engine and drive). For just about any boat out there, once it is more than a few years old, the manufacturer of the boat is of little help in solving problems for you. If the hull id # ends in 88, then you have a 1988 boat, if it was a 1989, the hull id# would end in 89. To identify the exact model of Bayliner capri you have, you could go to one of the used boat web sites such as here on Iboats or www.traderonline.com and look at pictures of other 1988 Bayliner Capri's that are 21ft LOA (lenght over all).

Re: PUZZLED

Hey, thanks for the help! I have a couple more quick questions. The starter is bad, is a standard gm 305 starter okay or is there a reason that the omc one is $120.00 more? Also, I have heard that there is a difference in marine and auto spark plugs, true or false. Again thanks for the help

Re: PUZZLED

Marine starters are designed with extra safety features. They do not release sparks. Sparks could ignite gas fumes and BOOOOM.... no more boat and possibly worse.

If the starter is dead have it rebuilt and specify it is for marine use.

Spark plugs are spark plugs just replace by replacement number. NAPA should have listings you can use.
