PVS plug, High Five. What size are you running?

I currently have the 23P High Five. Has excellent hole shot, but has the small hole plugs.

Was thinking of drilling out the plastic and making them mediums. If I dont like it I can just buy new plastic inserts and go back.

Curious what others are running for PVS size with their boats.

Lots of talk on the High Five, but not a lot on what size of holes people choose to go with.

I think you will do better if you give us the details on your setup. Prop results will vary depending on the application.
Your performance results, actual hole shot time to reach planing speed, wot rpm and gps speed.
there are an awful lot of variables application to application.

Thought my signature was updated. 95' Sea Ray 185 4.3L Mercruiser.

Going to get GPS this year. I have not run a stop watch. WOT 4800 RPM with light load fully trimmed with 250-500lbs people 200 lbs gear in the boat.

I haven't stopwatched, but with trim tabs I'm plane in seconds. Can hit 48-50 mph on tach although its new, it wouldn't be a good judge as they can be off.

Love the prop and love the hole shot. I really don't need to change the vent hole, but want to experiment and see if I can get an even better holeshot.

More of less just curious what others are doing with sterndrives. If they are leaving filled plugs in, small, med or large vent.

You can play around with it. It will not hurt anything because as you said you can always go back. You typically don't run as much venting on stern drives as you do lighter outboard powered boats. This is because to much venting will cause the prop to slip to the point of hurting your hole shot. A good way to tell if you have enough venting is to watch your tach when you nail it to jump on plane. If your seeing around 3000 RPMs your probably fine. If you're seeing significantly more than that like say 4000 RPMS you're venting to much. If you're seeing 2000-2500 you could use more venting. You're really trying to get the motor in it's power band when you nail the throttle for the hole shot.

Your numbers are pretty darn good.Do you ease off on the tabs once your up?They can steel mph if too aggressive.
While it's hard to beat thje high 5s grip and hole shot I think they do best on high powered boats.
I may be wrong but I think the 4.3 is at the bottom of the list.
I wonder if a ss 3 blade 24" prop might have a little more top end.

I believe I run pretty close to 3000 at the moment. I think I will just take the cordless drill and drill out the plastic and do more hole shots until I see the numbers I like. I know I probably sound crazy, because I love my hole shot, but the PVS caps are cheap and I like to tinker.

Thanks for the info.

Trim tabs are smart tabs. Automatic, I don't believe I could adjust hydraulic ones fast enough. I probably do 80% water sports 20% cruising and rarely go above 40 mph. I plan on keeping the high five on permanently and experiment. I have a 3 blade for backup. High Five was the only prop that would pull myself and a friend each over 200 lbs up on skiis.

I've yet to blow out with this prob and would like to see how far I can go on the holes before that happens. Or if any others on sterndrives have managed to achieve it.

Mercury's PVS venting system was and is designed to help 2 stroke motors build rpm more quickly.

Per Mercury's recommendation, most folks don't run the open vent plugs on 4 stroke motors(including stern drive) due to the flatter power curve. It can actually hurt the performance of the props with 4 stroke engines.

You can buy a plug kit from mercury that has 3 of 4 sets of plugs with different size holes

I have a 5.7 VP and use the medium size plugs.

Did you try large plugs or ever get blow out?

No I didn't. At speeds around 8-10 mph I do notice more slippage(rpms higher than before) now than when the holes were completely blocked. I'm running a Merc Enertia. Once on Plane, this prop grips the water like it was welded to it
