Im trying to get this old motor to start, and i dont have any spark on the upper cylender. it has new plugs J6C and what appears to be original wires. i removed the flywheel, and the coils have been replaced along with what i assume the points and condensor by the previous owner about 15+ yrs ago. the points gap is at .020. the motor has been sitting dormant for the 15yrs that i have owned it. i trimmed back the plug wire at the upper coil and same results.

any suggestions?

change both those wires. probably shorting out threw cracks in the insolation . make sure you use , copper stranded , not carbon .

under the sticky...Top Secret Files..scroll down to Universal Magneto Troubleshooting as the info there will help you...as you probably know the front coil < closest to carb > is for the top cylinder...you may only need to clean that set of points really well and regap..if the plugwires are original, you'd be well served to go ahead and replace them now...7mm solid core copper...~ $2 a ft., or less, from the dealer...a little lube on the wires enables them to slide by one another more easily when inserting them through the hold down clamps under the armature plate...no need to completely remove the clamps, just loosen them enough so you can remove and reinstall the wires

Clean the points with a piece of clean card stock, or a business card dipped in unleaded gasoline ( not pre-mix!) They get surface corrosion on them if left sitting for years.

well, copper core plug wires are hard to come by, so they are getting changed when i find some. i picked up a spark gap tester and found out i am getting spark on the upper. i cleaned the points with gas, sprayed gas into the cylenders, and she fired up. unfortunalty it didnt stay running, seems like im having a fuel delivery issue. time to look into the carb..... any ideas on this obsolete carb?
