I am rebuilding a qd 20 Johnson. I am a newby and have a seloc manual which I find hard to read an vauge in general for a newby like myself.
The motor has compression. I don't yet have a pressure check. I pulled the recoil and checked the condition of the points from the acess plate in the flywheel. The coils are covered with a red covering and everything appers like new in there.
I pulled out the sparkplugs and turned the motor over and there is spark present in both plugs. The spark itself apperars to be thin light blue. It is hard for me to pull over and watch plugs by myself.
So yesterday I decide to test out the motor by putting a bit of gas in each cylinder and turning the motor over. No sign of life at all. New plugs, properly gapped. The recoil rope appears too long for the motor as well so I don't know if that is the problem or if the coils are too weak to fire the motor. Any info much appreciated.

Hmmmmm.
Did you have the armature plate turned to start are a little past it. If the Throttle grip isn't turned where the spark goes off at the right time, that may be the problem. check the compression as soon as possible, but if it feels pretty good I'd think it would crank. Even with only 60 lbs., they'll crank. Are you choking it and making sure the choke plate is shutting the air off when you crank it? try squirting a little dab of premixed fuel and oil to the carb throat, choking it, and setting the throttle to a little past start. It should crank. It doesn't take too much spark to get one to crank.

Do yourself a favor and get a OEM manual. They are a lot easier to understand and the cover only one motor. There are a couple of sellers on Ebay that sell OEM manuals searayman13 and wsquaredodie. Plus I'm sure the guys here can tell you other places to get one. These guys on the forum know old outboards and will be a lot of help to you.

By the way, if it still won't fire up, almost surely it is the coils. Just because they show a little spark doesn't mean they're good. I had one that would shock the ______ out of you but wouldn't run the motor.
