I currently have a 1985 Evinrude 25 on my stripped down pontoon. Not a speed demon by any means, but I'm satisfied with the performance and I've never had a problem with it. Problem is, it's loud and it stinks.

I have the opportunity to upgrade to a 2013 Etec 25 and was wondering if I can expect the same/better/worse performance out of the new Etec as I am getting out of the 1985?

My main concern is the sound but I don't really want to get any slower if I don't have to. With my wife and I on the boat, I can get between 13 and 15 mph (via gps) depending on conditions.

Thanks for any and all opinions.

The performance should be about the same. Why not get a 4 cycle outboard? It will be less stinky than the E-TEC and likely quieter. Go with a bit more power, say 30 or 35HP.

I disagree with the 4 cycle being less stinky than the e-tec.The e-tec burns so much of its fuel properly that emissions are just as good if not better than 4 strokes!ive never smelled anything ever from my 60 e-tec and its just as quiet ,no, quieter than my buddies 50 merc 4 stroke.I t also starts way faster than any 4 stoke ive ever used. Also has tons of grunt for quick take offs with heavy loads. So my 2 cents says to stay with your idea of e-tec ,get as big as you can afford no matter what you go for ,you wont regret it.

Thanks guys. If I were to buy a new one, I'd go bigger but I have an opportunity on a used 2013 at what I feel is a decent price (2500.00 with controls) that's why I'm asking.

I also tend to disagree with the four-strokes being quieter. If you look at the various engine manufacturer web sites or boat tests you will find that there is very little difference in noise levels at wide open throttle and only a slight edge for the four-strokes at idle and mid range. The issue is that four strokes have a "different" sound than a two stroke. That does not make them quieter.
