Question about buying a used OMC Outdrive

Soo my outdrive is done for. The upper gear is screwed, the bearing carrier bearing housing is done for etc. before paying almost 600 for a new gear set, and having someone do the job of re shimming, and putting it back together. I was at my local boat dealer, and he said I'd be better off just buying a new outdrive either upper or the whole outdrive used.

Ok so I found a pretty decent deal on a a whole outdrive. The guy says it was serviced in 2005, but been sitting since 2005, and was running perfect before sitting. Mainly I guess I would need to change the oil etc. Check to make sure the gears, and bearings are in good shape. Is there anything else that would need to be done for a outdrive that's been sitting on a boat that long?

My motor was a 2.3 liter omc cobra 89 model. But his outdrive is a 93 omc cobra outdrive that was on a 3.0 engine. According to my boat mechanic I can buy this, and it would work plug and play basically on my 89 bayliner omc 2.3L cobra. He also said I could just use the upper unit on it, and switch out and use my lower unit if needed be. I just wanted to make sure this would work for my motor, and the drive shaft etc would match up fine with my 2.3L cobra.

Basically what needs to be done with a sitting outdrive? And what all model outdrives would match up to my 89 2.3 Omc Cobra? Does it really matter if the actual motor is larger? Or will the outdrive work as well for a smaller motor as my boat mechanic said it would? Also can anyone tell me the years of the outdrives that would work on my cobra, and if it matters what size motor the outdrive was attached to?

Thanks

Re: Question about buying a used OMC Outdrive

I think the 2.3 ratio was quite a bit different from the 3.0, but by changing props you may be able to make it work
The other issue is shift linkage adjustments... You'll need to make some changes and maybe to the shift rod height on that 93 drive before you install it. There were so many different specs for those Cobras year to year.... I'd be getting the 2 manuals and comparing stuff like that if it were me.

You'll need a new prop anyways, because a 93 cobra 3.0 lower has a 15 spline propshaft. whereas an 89 2.3 Cobra drive has a 13 spline propshaft.
