hey all im in he process of swtching my 82 inline 6 90hp merc for a 88' 70hp merc...yesterday i began removeing some of the control cables and such from the 90 i plan on using the same controls for the 70 so far the steering ,gear and throtle linkages look like they will bolt right on.....the power trim on the 90 uses 2 hydulic lifts with the motor and oil tank bolted in my boat where the 70 seems to have a self contained system right on the outboard so i dont see this being a real problem but its hard to tell unill i get the 70 on the boat the main thing that im worried about is the wiring harness he 90 has a big round plug just in side the front cowling wich i dissconected and i noticed that its again pluged in inside of the boat at the rear ..sorta like an extenion cord i assume this would be for ignition ,choke etc.. so i guess my question is if anyone knows what i might have to do or buy to hook this up that would be great............... im very new to this 70 and know nothing of how it fucntions it has a big black air box so i havent seen if it has a choke and i have not seen a primer also i havent seen any sort of a hook up for the ignition or the power trim please keep in mind that i was alone at he time(hard to move around) and the 70 is sittin on its side in my truck so there may be things on that side that im not seeing any help would be awesome thanks in advance

Re: Question about controls

The throtttle/shift cables are the same, but the wiring harnesses are different enough that you'll need a different control. I'm aware of no adapters unless what you're describing in the 90 is one.

it would appear to me that thats what that is there willy but im not compltly sure ...so from what your telling me i will have to buy new controls for the 70? my original plan was to install and use this 70 untill i got my 90 back up and running so even a tempory fix for the ingintion system would be fine if the steering throtle and gear shifters all work with it by the way it is merc controls i assume it came wihe the 90 and i assume the 90 was bought on the boat when new

Re: Question about controls

i got some help yesterday to tip the engine up on its end and i saw the plug-in for the controls.. it had the exact same plug with the exact same # of pins so i would think that they would control the same functions correct? i guess my next question is would the power trim controls be in that harness as well or is it on a seprate set of wires also i found 2 female ends on 2 wires (forget the color) right next to the main harness plug-in for the controls ..not quit sure what there for.....................................................................................................for those who dont know its an 89' 70 merc ELPTO..thanks in advance P>S im so close to gettin on the water i can taste it HMMMMM SALTY

Re: Question about controls

Boonex,
I believe you are correct. The difference between the two motors would be haw the wiring is routed by the internal harness. The External harness to the controls should be the same.
