Hello everyone,
I am getting ready tomorrow, this Sunday, as a matter of fact helping my dad install a 90 horse Evinrude outboard on a 1992 Sunbird Odyssey 210 that he bought yesterday and the 90 horse outboard he bought a few days ago both at a steal, and I mean a steal of a price. Anyway, me and my dad wants to first install the outboard onto the Sunbird boat and get it cranked up to see how she runs before my dad starts restoring the boat. Anyway, I need to know if the existing OMC, Johnson/Evinrude controls that are currently inside the Sunbird boat will work with the 1997, 90 horse Evinrude model# E90TSLECM. The controls in the boat are OMC, Evinrude/Johnson but are a 1992 controls. Will we have any issues plugging in the boats controls to the outboard plugs? If we do have issues what is the cheapest way or the easiest way we can get the boats electrical controls, plugs/harnesses hooked up to the outboards electrical/plug/harnesses. Thanks for your help and we definitely want to get this motor/outboard cranked up and see how she runs. Any pictures, literature, or instructions will help GREATLY!!!!!

If the harness plugs are the same color you should be OK.

Daviet,
I hope so. I am going over tomorrow to help my dad install it onto his new to him Sunbird Deck boat. If it runs good that will be the determining factor if we go ahead and restore the boat and motor. Hopefully the outboard will run ok and we will have a really nice boat but we have alot of work ahead of us. Today we removed all of the deck railing and rotten furniture. He is in need of good used replacement deck furniture if anyone has any but first we will have to see how the outboard runs and go from there. I am hoping for good luck on it and excited at the same time. Hope all turns out good.

If the owner will let you, check the lower unit for water and do a compression check.

Yeah, we already bought the outboard and brought it home a few days ago so now the excitement/uneasiness is settling in seeing if that outboard is any good. Keeping my fingers crossed this outboard runs good. If it does, like I said above, we have alot of work to do in this project.

1992 controls will not work with a 97 outboard. The 92 used the big red plug, for 96 and later OMC switched to the modular wiring harness. You are going to have to find controls from one of the salvage yards or order a new set from BRP at

You can also obtain an adapter kit from an Evinrude dealer.
