I am looking at buying a fish finder for my boat. The finder will be right in front of my driver side windshield. I am just looking at a cheaper model, as I don't do alot of fishing, but I was curious, what needs to be installed on these? I am sure I will have to get power to the battery, but the transducer, is there a certain one that is better than the other? I am looking at the humminbird 525, I believe it has a transom mount, is there any drilling required for this? Just curious, thanks.

Yes there is drilling involved with a transom mount transducer. What kind of boat are you puting it in? I have a Pirahna 220 and I installed the transducer in the bilge. The only problem is I dont get the water temp but I recently purchased a seperate temp sensor. If I could go back I would install the transducer on the transom. I am no longer affraid to drill holes in my new boat. I do get excellent readings with the way it is now though.

If it were going in your car, you'd say "drivers side". In a boat, you say "starboard". :D

Most FF in that price range come with a "skimmer" transducer that works equally well inside the boat or on the transom. Unless you have an aluminum boat.

drilling isn't so bad as long as you are diligent about sealing the holes with a good marine adhesive sealant such as 3m 5200.
