My stove in the house just kicked the bucket and wwe're gonna need a new one. Now we have gas (propane) at the house. Will any gas stove work or does it have to be a special stove for propane? Thanks!

Re: Question about gas stove

The burner orfices are different from natural gas to propane. Whomever you buy the stove from should be able to change them no charge though.

Re: Question about gas stove

Any gas stove will work. However, most gas stoves come set up for natural gas. They do supply orffices for propane that you would need to swap out. It's really easy. We just bought a new stove....

What went wrong on your gas stove? They are a pretty easy appliance to fix, not a whole lot to them...

The difference between gas and propane is the orifices as others have said, but again, I would be interested to hear what went wrong, I worked in the RV business for a while and they are not hard to repair..

Friends of ours were giving away their gas stove because the pezio auto starter card went, it was cheaper for a new gas stove than the card+instalation.

Re: Question about gas stove

That must have been one expensive card! I can get a card for most stoves for less than $25 and the installation is only about a 10 to 15 minute job for anyone that has common sense..of course, the pezio starter is not needed to use the stove, I keep a small long nosed butane starter close to the stove to light burners just in case we need it and it works fine..again, if you look at a gas stove, they are really a pretty simple piece of equipment, there just ain't much that can go wrong, at the worst, the regulator will go bad on them and that is not that expensive either..

FYI, my sister just bought a new gas stove and found the best deal at Best Buy, FWIW.

Re: Question about gas stove

Thanks for the replies!! We were losing propane in our tank very fast and also had a slight smell in the house that was only noticiable sometimes. When the propane guy got here and he filled the tank, we were watching the gauge go down. We unhooked the stove and it stopped leaking. The guy said it had an internal leak. The stove is old and it gave my girlfriend an excuse to look for another (go figure!) as she is a pastry chef and cooks a lot out of the house. The stove we have now had a very inconsistant oven temp and no electronic ignition which I suspect uses more propane as well. We're buying used off craigslist and there are no stoves set up for propane. I called a local appliance store and they wanted $150 to install new orfices and ajust the regulator. Is this job easy to do so I can save the $150?? Thanks!

Re: Question about gas stove

Changing the orifices is a pretty straight forward procedure, adjusting the regulator requires a special gauge called a manometer, you might check the local rental stores, all though not a common tool they carry, you might get lucky.

If you can get one, it is pretty simple to adjust the regulator, if not, then you need to call a tech.

Check with your propane dealer. I would think they would fix you up for little or no charge. If I was getting a new stove, I'd get one with the burner grate that covers the whole cook top. Good luck.

Re: Question about gas stove

2 items.
1. Propane uses smaller jets.
2. Propane does not use a regulator on the stove. Natural gas does.

Most modern (last 25 years) stoves have a regulator with a flip over plug that in one position makes it regulate, and when you flip it over pins it open for propane.

Most of them also have a set of the other jets in a holder bolted to the rear frame some where.

hope it helps

Re: Question about gas stove

Do you happen to have a model number on the stove you are looking at?

As far as regulators, it will depend, if they have a regulator on the tank, or in the system somewhere..

Re: Question about gas stove

Conventionally, Natural gas is supplied to the home piping at 10 inches water column and is further reduced to 3.5 inches water column at the appliance.

Propane is supplied to the home piping at 11 inches water column and used at that pressure. (about 0.4 psi) The appliance itself doesn't have a regulator. Small tanks have a single stage regulator that goes directly from the high pressure to 11 inches. Bulk tank systems generally have a primary regulator that reduces the pressure to about 10 psi at the tank, and a secondary regulator at the building that further reduces it to 11 inches for delivery to the building piping.

Further consideration is that natural gas is about 1000 btu per cubic foot, and propane is twice that.

J_Martin,

My stove HAS a regulator on it, and my tank does not, different areas of the country do things a bit differently, of course we in Montana are back woods country hicks, and don't know no better.

But i can say, we don't use single stage regulators either, you have to have a 2 stage to be legal where I live.

I find that real hard to believe for a domestic cook stove hookup. Redneck fishouse heater maybe, but them's the ones that go into orbit on occasion.

A cook stove set up for propane may have a regulator on it, but it will have a slug in it to pin it open.

Two state on anything more than 100 lb. cylinder here. That would be any bulk tank.

Re: Question about gas stove

J_Martin,

Part of what I do for a living in my retirement is plumb houses for propane, we have very little in the way of Natural Gas in our area, at least in the remote homes, now you may find it hard to believe, but I can assure, I don't..

I would suggest anyone doing a propane system, make sure and talk to your local propane supply company and they can advise of the correct way to set things up..base on your local codes..Codes vary in different areas of the country..

Sounds like this poster has the information to ask the questions needed of his local supplies, so I will now bow out of the conversation on this topic.
