Question about Gauges

Hi again

My 73 Glastron V156 has only a single gauge (Speedometer) I was considering adding a full range of gauges. I have a few questions. First, what's a VDO gauge? I'm I correct that it's a Voltage Drop Out? Second are they universally usable for my 1985 70HP Johnson?

Thanks

Denny

Re: Question about Gauges

I believe that the VDO you are referencing is the brand name on Siemens' line of gauges.

Re: Question about Gauges

VDO is a brand name and does not stand for "Voltage Drop Out". Faria and Teleflex also provide a full range of marine instruments, either individually or in matched sets that usually include Speedo, Tach, Fuel, and Voltmeter for outboards and the same for inboards and I/O's but those sets would typically include an oil pressure gauge.

Re: Question about Gauges

Thanks guys. I don't have a clue where I got the idea in my head that VDO was a "type" of gauge.

On a separate note, I keep reading about checking the spark. Now I've done my share of automobile engines and such and always took out the plug and shorted it to ground. Is there a way to make this spark checking device?

Thanks

Re: Question about Gauges

I've had good results with my Teleflex gauges; I have a tach, speedometer and volt gauge. If it's new enough, your control box should have a plug on it just under the ignition key switch. OMC makes a wiring harness that plugs right into that, and the other end has the 3 wires that hook up to your tach; much easier than running wires back to your motor.
