Question about Hub/switches/routers

The Cisco 804 ISDN Router has 4 ports on the back. The first port has a push button switch next to it labeled "hub/node".

I want to know the purpose of that switch. The manual has not been any help so far.

I think it is for when the ISDN router is to be connected to a hub/switch, but I am not sure. I know that when I had the PC plugged in to it and the switch was set for "hub" the port didn't respont to the PC. I flipped the switch and the PC was connected.

Can I use that port to connect this ISDN router to another router? Does it have to be connected to the WAN port on the other router or as a regular port?

Re: Question about Hub/switches/routers

That is a Crossover Switch.

to connect a hub to a hub, you need a Crossover Cable, or you the the uplink port that does this FOR you.

So if you want to use a hub or a switch so you can have more than 3 computers hooked to your 804, you hook a REGULAR network cable to the "HUB" port of the cisco, and to any REGULAR port on a hub or switch.

OR: Use a regular port on the cisco, and then plug a regular cable into the uplink port of a hub/switch

Almost every hub/switch out there has an uplink port so you don't have to have a crossover cable, it's very handy.

If you are going to use your 804 as a modem only, and have it set in Bridge mode, then yes, you would go from it to the WAN port on a router. Depends on the router to weather it wants the strait through, or the crossover from the modem. usually it uses a reuglar port.

Re: Question about Hub/switches/routers

To add ...

Here is a picture of my Cluster F$#@@#$ in my office.

HP 12 port Hub on top, black button to the left of the ports is marked "MIDI" this is the uplink port, if that button is pressed, it is turned into a crossover cable. That yellow cable is plugged into a regular port on the 100base 3com hub below it.

Below that is my Intel VPN, then Netopia DSL Router and Wireless Access Point on the shelf below.

So my network goes:

DSL Router ---> VPN ----> HP Hub that is linked to the 3com hub along with the APoint.

...why do I have 2? had been running the 10base hub for the lsat couple years, needed to do a 60 gig transfer yesterday, so I just sat the 100 base in there and connected those 2 machines to it. I dodn't have a switch laying around, and don't really need one most of the time.

Re: Question about Hub/switches/routers

Noel, the situation is this:

I was using a USR broadband router (just connected to a dial up modem) that was 100t base. The Cisco 804 ISDN router is only 10t based. I want to connect the PC's together using the USR broadband router for the high speed pc to pc connection, and connect the Cisco 804 router to the USR router as a modem only (like your last scenario above).

So I think I set the switch on the ISDN router to "hub", connect a regular cable from the hub port to the WAN port on the USR router? Is that right?

What/how is "bridge Mode" done?

Hey, I've seen worse wiring jobs in the server rooms where I work. That's not too bad!

Re: Question about Hub/switches/routers

:D i am getting to confused but the WAN port from the USR should just plug into the ? port on the modem and be happy

the uplink port on a hub is the only real difference that i know of between a hub and a switch

Router A networking device that connects multiple networks together, such as a local network and the Internet.

tommays
