Re: Question about ignition coils for a Johnson.
Yes, your '57 uses the same ignition coils as the '52-'54 engine.
But! I would never buy used ignition coils unless they were extremely cheap. There were many that failed in time due to cracks in their insulation whic appeared with age. Something about never getting the epoxy mix quite right on them. Since this ignition coil was common to almost all 2 cylinder Johnson & Evinrude engines '50s-60s, and were used on some outboards up into the 90s, and most of those engines had problems, the ignition coil is extremely common and inexpensive.

The modern versions seem to solve the problems with the plastics. Iboats sells the aftermarket version of the coil (18-5181) for $15 each. The dealer one is 584477, which sells for about $25 each. I find the aftermarket coil not only to be a good value, but also I find it to be superior to the factory coil.

Tell us what parts you're after and we can line you up with where to find them.

That link rickdb1boat gave you a while back has a very detailed page on how to replace those ignition coils. The 3hp Johnson and Evinrude were identical, so don't let any of that worry you. There's no real differences '57-'52 either.
