Question about Joe Reeves timing procedure

I used Joe's timing procedure on my 1988 Johnson 110 and it worked great. Im now trying to link and sync my kicker motor which is a 1987 Johnson 8hp and I was wondering if the Joe Reeves timing method will work on this motor? The main problem as I see it would be cranking the motor over since it's not electric start. I was wondering if my impact gun (with spark plugs out of course) would spin the motor fast enought to check the timing?
Any thoughts on this?

Re: Question about Joe Reeves timing procedure

timing on the 8hp is not adjustable...link and sync amounts to centering the carb linkage roller on the timing cam mark just as the carb throttle plate starts to open and make sure the throttle plate is perfectly horizontal as the carb roller is on the highest point of the timing cam

Thanks for the reply. Just curious, why a timing pointer and flywheel timing marks if it's not adjustable?

Re: Question about Joe Reeves timing procedure

the roller to timing mark is adjustable...the ignition timing itself isn't...can't answer for flywheel timing marks

Re: Question about Joe Reeves timing procedure

If you have an OEM factory service manual it will tell you the exact timing procedures for your 8 hp mtr.
