Hello
I am selling my boat (the tuffy) and it seems like I have milky oil. A buyer asked about it and I, like a dummy, told him it was milky when I drained it a month ago. Well now he calls me and asks me to drop 4k on the price so he can get a brand new lower unit. I'm pretty sure everyone here can confirm its a load of BS. At minimum he says he wants the lower rebuilt and the "gears measured up"
. How the hell do you measure a gear??? Yes, you can measure backlash, but not the gear teeth...
Long story short, I got an OEM lower unit seal kit for 20 bucks. I'll throw that in, and then it should be ok right? Buddy is saying that it will blow up and needs a full blown rebuild... I just need something convincing to say to him... I feel like If I say I did it myself (ive done a few lower units before) he'll be really cheezed.
Also, what is an acceptable amount of play for the front prop shaft roller bearing? I can see the shaft move if I push it with my hand. Another Q. The OEM prop shaft bearing is $300. What is the accuracy spec on these? I could just measure the old one and go get an SKF at napa...
