Re: Question about Mercruiser GM V6
Similar situation, my dad just gave me his Starcraft Islander which has a GM V6, had been in storage 3 years and had recently had the engine submerged.

If the oil is seperating or a milky white or cappucino color, you probably have water in your oil. Water breaks down oil.

In my case, I literally changed the oil 10 times. Go to Kmart and buy cheap Exxon gallons of oil. They were 4 bucks here. Also used Fram filters instead of the Mercruiser filters to save money. I don't know what filter you need, but pull off the mercruiser filter and use the internet to cross reference it with the numbers on your mercruiser filter. Mine was the fram 3980 (I believe.)

Between each oil change, crank the engine for about 10 seconds to stir everything up. By oil change number eight we had the engine running and were letting it run for about 2 minutes between those changes. Rinse and repeat until the oil is oil not cappucino colored.

Also, you probably need outdrive muffs to push water through the outdrive while running it (if the boat isn't in the water). Check out Mercstuff .com for good reference material.

Trent
