Question about Mercruiser slave solenoid repair

I have a 2000 Mercruiser 4.3L that has a bad slave solenoid. It will activate (click) when key is turned but won’t close the contacts to send power to the starter solenoid. It is relatively new so I disassembled it thinking the contacts might be burned. Instead everything was clean inside. After reassembling I bench tested it off of my 18 volt cordless drill battery and it activates, closes the contacts and I have continuity. Back in the boat it will trigger (click) but not close the contacts. I loosened the main lugs and dropped them less than 1/16” so they were closer to the copper disc and it works perfect every time. Why would the solenoid travel be too short on a 12V battery but okay with 18V ? Appreciate any help on this. Thanks

18v is going to pull the plunger harder and faster (and burn out the coil)...

Got it. Makes sense. Thanks
So is it okay to use this solenoid now that it seems to start the boat on every try?

Check and make sure you have a really good solid ground on the solenoid, it can make all the difference.
