Question about my lower shift cable

On my boat, the lower shift cable comes through the transom inside a hose, like a 3/4 rubber heater-hose type hose. At the end of that hose is a boot that looks like a CV-joint boot, and the red cable comes out of this to the engine shift bracket. My question is what is supposed to seal this if anything? Is there supposed to be a clamp around the boot? I get spalsh of water through the boot when stopped and there's a chop since the fit is very loose around the cable, but am afraid to clamp it because I don't want to bind the cable. I tied it up a little higher for now, but it's as high as it can go and in a 1-2 foot chop, sitting still, I still get water splashing in through it, enough that after an hour or so of fishing I have enough to run the bilge pump for a minute or so. The end of the boot is just about 6-8" above the water line.

What's the deal?

Thanks!

Re: Question about my lower shift cable

hello there should be a small grommet around the cable that fits into the boot. use a wire tie to strap it in place and then tie it up as high on the transome as possible. I have seen them filled with silicone but I never tried it.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Question about my lower shift cable

That is is just what mine had.I replaced my shift cable and put a new boot on it as you described. The boot goes over the big rubber tube,It has a plastic tie strap on it there.I used one of those little tools for pulling the plastic tie tight. Then the rubber grommet goes around shift cable and into boot.A smaller plastice tie goes around boot there.I pulled it tight also.

Re: Question about my lower shift cable

I see. I'm just missing the grommet and zip ties then. Thanks guys! People panic when they hear water splashing around under the engine box / floor on my boat. I try to explain to them it's OK, but all the see is the boat sinking! :D
