i just got a question about my mercruiser 470 we took it out last weekend and it ran great the water temp was like 160 degrees which i didnt think was all that bad, we went clear across the lake and on our way back we got on the gas pretty good, well when we got back to the dock and dropped my father off at the dock to get the truck it kept dying on me everytime i went to put it into gear, if i would go real easy trying to put it into gear it would die but if i was quicker about getting it in to gear it would go just fine....anyone have any ideas to what could cause it? its just got a carb on it im thinking maybe the idle needs to be kicked up just a hair?? thanks for the help!!

Re: Question About My Mercruiser.

Might be 1) floats not adjusted properly and spillage into carb and/or 2) improper jetting making it pig rich.
-just a shot in the dark.

Pull the plugs and see what they look like (as long as you didn't "idle" it too long after the incident)

sounds like your shift cable. look at the shifting mechanism at the motor, and see if the shift interrupt switch is engaging as you shift it--it's a bracket with a roller in the middle of it. if, when you're shifting into gear, the bracket moves and engages the switch, you've likely got a bad lower shift cable. btw, don't go real easy putting it into gear, you'll grind your gears...
