I have a 1990 90hp force outboard . I am going to need oil to mix in gas for it really soon. I had quicksilver and another type (in blue jug) in the past and they were both non synthetic oils. Question is is it OK to start using semi or full synthetic oil to mix in gas 50:1 ratio ?

Thnx

You can use any TCW-3 you want at any time, so yes. 50:1

I agree with ondarvr. I use a synthetic because "I seem to get less smoke". As long as it is TCW-3 you will be fine.

Yes, no, maybe, no way, absolutely, sort of, these are the answers you'll get when asking this question. So run whatever oil you want, for whatever reason, and enjoy it.

ok..see what you mean about that..
But i didnt no since my motor was a 1990 if semi of full synthetic would be better to run since i only ever had used non synthetic oils in past.

Maybe.

If you have trouble with fouled plugs and carbon build up while using petrol based oil, then try the semi or full synthetic and see if it helps.

But if the motor is tuned properly, has strong spark, and isn't used for slow idling for long periods of time, it should be perfectly fine with the cheaper petrol based oil.

Ask 10 boaters about oil issues like this... you are likely to get 20 to 30 different answers.

The main difference (in my opinion) is how cleanly the oil will burn. I like Penzoil low ash 2-stroke oils because they burn more cleanly than most others. (can't say all because I haven't tried every 2-stroke oil out there)

The first outboard oils were designed to carbon the rings and cause failure.
My new 1988 85's lasted 3-4mo before the rings seized. Lots of slow trolling.
They had so many complaints from new boat owners and them having to rebuild because the rings carboned and failed.
Then TCW-2 was produced and was a bit better but still tons of problems.
Then TCW-3 came out and the problem was solved.
Seems the ash was removed and stopped the problem??

Smoking: if you are a slow boater?? then the smoke is gonna be there no matter what you do.
Outboards were designed to go FAST!!!
Designed to run at wide open all day if you wanted.
The old ran slow, the oil (at 50-1) was way too much and built up and lots of smoke.

The newer oil injected motors have a metering system and mix the right amount of oil for the engine speed.

But when ever you add oil to a motor?? SMOKE!!
