Question about planing out

The past couple times I've been out, I can't seem to get on plane quickly without really aerating the prop. I'll give it about 2/3 throttle, trim up some and the engine suddenly over revs, then the boat starts porpoising. Embarassing more than anything, but annoying that I can't get on plane smoothly.

What's the best technique for getting up-n-gone?

Volvo 5.0/SX by the way.

Re: Question about planing out

Chris,
If you're still running the pro-pulse 4-blade, my guess, is that you are trimming it up too much during launch... try setting a "nominal" amount of trim. I'd start with one "quick bump of the trim switch" higher than you would use to run at a non-porpoising cruise as the starting point... then work it a VERY little at a time each way off that nominal position, during MULTIPLE launches, until you find the "sweet-spot" for the load, & throttle opening you're running...

Good Luck, Obiwan

Sure... I'd leave your trim down to get on the step and then go for the trim 'up'

Agree always trim down before you start. Trim is used for once you are on a plane. Watch the water break on the side of the boat. When you first start you will see it break infront of you. As you get on a plane and trim up the break will move to the back. Be careful how much you trim up the prop will catch air and over rev. Just bump the trim up till you are at the sweat spot.
Good luck-

Re: Question about planing out

When I take off from a stop, I have the outdrive completely tucked in. And, use full throttle. As I come out of the water, not right away either, I bump the trim out as fast as I can without spinning out. But, I think your biggest problem may be trimming out at all during the initial 4 seconds or so of take off. Also, not using full throttle will take way longer to get up anyway, and will really delay the amount of time in which you can start to trim out. Has worked for me, just my way of doing it, good luck.
