Hi,

I have a recently poured Arjay transom and after cutting out the drain hole I set out to install the Garboard drain plug set on exterior skin. There are three holes on the plug that are oriented around the drain hole in a triangular orientation. Apparently, I drilled the pilot holes too small and snapped the heads off of two of the screws when mounting the drain kit, and need to know the best way to back them out if possible?
(still kicking myself as I just got in too big of a hurry trying to get it done before dark and the end of the weekend)

Please let me know what the best practice on this woould be in removing them, thanks!

If you can't get a vise grip on them,,,,good luck. Grind them flush, rotate the garboard drain, drill new holes, and seal it all up with 5200.

Thanks for the replies - one more question re: the screws: I used brass wood screws to match the color of the drain, but would stainless be stronger and less prone to snap? Hopefully making the pilot hole bigger will alleviate anyway, but just wondering. The Arjay is fairly hard stuff.

Yep Brass is weak as heck. If you want to use em then use steel screws the same size to "Cut the Threads" then put the brass screws in. If it were me, I'd just use stanless and be done with it. I'd still precut the threads with steel first. I would also use a bit of 3M 4200 on the threads just to help with "Backout" issues.

Woodonglass,

I agree and will just use the stainless. The guys above suggested using 3M 5200 to seal the drain. I think it came with 4200 originally as it was more rubbery - which of those two would you use?

Really doesn't matter. Both will work. 5200 will dry Hard after a while. 4200 stays "Rubbery" With your composite transom it won't make a difference. Since you asked, I'd use the 4200
