Question about rust removal!!!

I found at the end of last year that I burned a hole in my #3 piston. Well after removing the cylinder head and exhaust manifold, I apparently should have put everything back together until I could repair it because now everything has rust on it, including the cylinder walls. My question is, how do I remove this rust and did I really screw something up by letting it get rusty? Its finally getting repaired this saturday and I want to get rid of all the rust before then. Thanks for your assistance.

Unfortunately if it's too rusty your job just got bigger.

Machine shops remove the rust by putting the block and heads in a "hot tank" that does a pretty good job.

You don't have to worry about corrosion in the cyls since it will be removed when they're bored out for the next size pistons.

Any rust on the valves & seats will be removed with grinding and replacement of the valves that don't clean up with grinding.

Rust on the crank is removed by polishing/grinding. The machine shop will determine if the crank can be used or replaced. The cam and lifters get replaced so no worries there.


This is a complete rebuild right?

If it is just light rust you may be able to use a cylinder hone to clean it up.
Let a machine shop look it over they should be able to tell you.
