I have a 1980 omc 140hp w/ stringer 400.
Weather has been nice 55+ lately. Still freezing at night though.
I want to start ordering parts for my motor (carb, tune-up kit, tilt motor)
Before I spend the money, I want to fire up motor and make sure no damage was done over the winter. I do also need a re-seal of lower unit. If I put muffs on will water enter the lower unit? Also will just draining the block and manifolds prevent cracking? I have no power steering or anything to drain. And last can I put in "drive" w/o a prop or should I put it back on for testing.
You guys are the guru's and I need your opinion. Spring Fever has arrived.

Be patient, unless you want to winterize it again, or unless you're POSITIVE that there will be no more freezing weather.

Sure you can start it up on muffs. That won't put water into the drive (assuming you mean the drive OIL side of the drive)
Yes, just draining the cooling system properly will prevent cracking.
No, you don't need a prop on the drive to run it.

MANY, MANY people use their boats all winter and just drain the cooling system when finished for the day.

Ayuh,... That'll work,......
But,....
You should also pop the Big Hose off the circulating water pump Too,....
It'll sometimes hold another Qt. or so of Water......
