Hi there
I'm coming in from the dark side (tillers) and I have some questions about steering systems for a small centre console boat with a 90 horse mercury on it.
The existing steering system is a teleflex rack and pinion system, with 4 turns from lock to lock. It works just fine, but I plan to operate my boat with a jet pump as well as a prop, and for jet pump applications I need to be able to make some very quick steering decisions under power. I'm concerned about my ability to simultaneously control the motor's throttle and do the required hand over hand steering.
Looking for opinions on what the best steering system would be that has a very direct steering ratio? I know that some jet boat inboard systems will steer 270 degrees, but I'm unsure if they work on outboards. I'm thinking that something around 360 degrees would be optimal but I'm not sure if it's available.
the simple solution may be to put a knob on the existing steering wheel... I've seen this work for others.
any thoughts?
