Question about towing...

My husband and I own a '63 Glasspar. We're thinking of buying a Hyundai Veracruz, with a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. I've done my best to calculate the total weight the truck would be pulling. Here's what I came up with...

Weight of............................In pounds:

boat (without motor).............390
motor (60 hp)......................350 (?)
trailer.................................400 (?)
gas....................................150 (20 gal @ 7lbs/gal)
boat accessories..................150 (battery, anchor, fenders...)
miscellaneous stuff................50 (cooler...)
humans in truck....................350 (heard this is supposed to be included in the equation)

My grand total comes to 1,840 pounds. Does this sound about right? Or am I way off? In your opinion, is this enough truck to tow this boat? Thanks, in advance, for your help. Hope you're having a great weekend...

Re: Question about towing...

You didn't say what model glaspar boat you have. The weight of the boat may be low, but according to the fiberglassics site it could be right. The engine weight is high though for a 2 stroke. In any case, I doubt you are far enough off that you will have a problem. Towing should be fine, make sure to read the vehicle owners manual for required equipment for towing at the towed weight of the trailer. Sometimes the vehicle manufacturer requires things like trailer brakes, anti-sway bars, etc, as you get closer to the maximum towing capacity of the vehicle. Your vehicle might need trailer brakes to tow a 2000 pound trailer where my pickup would not.

even with perhaps some low estimates, you are well within the range of the vehicle.

I would figure more weight for the boat and the trailer. The others are about right.

Re: Question about towing...

breaks on the trailer are always a nice thing during any towing. heavy trucks can handle no break trailers as many other tow vehicles but breaks only make stoping easier in any case. all numbers are close enough, you can round up and still have room. if you can get the truck with a tow package it will have the extras to keep things working like transmission coolers.
