Question about water pump symptom 96 Evinrude OceanPro 200hp

On my past trip with the boat, I started noticing that upon starting the engine (regardless of whether it was warmed up or not) it would take about 20-30 secs for the telltale stream to start coming out at full force. It would sit there kind of trickling at a noticeably lower flow rate than its usual running state.

After about 20-30 secs it would start going at full strength with no problems subsequently, at cruise around 3800 rpm, the pressure is just over 20 psi.

The pump was changed less than 50 hours ago.

Anyone have a clue as to whether this is normal or not, and what I should check into?

Thanks in advance

Welcome!

It sounds normal to me but it concerns me that you feel its not how the motor has acted before. It normally takes a few seconds for the overboard indicator to develope a "full" stream.

Good luck!

the input is appreciated, it caught my attention since usually the telltale started at full flow rate as the engine is up and running...
once I noticed it, I didn't put the engine in gear untill the telltale and dash gauge indicated normal, just in case I had a problem..
I still believe something has changed, I just want to make sure I have thought of everything before I drop the lower unit and change the pump just for the hell of it....

reading the surrounding posts regarding cooling, I should also add that I also replaced the thermostats with the pump, so they are less than 50 hours old too

Which pump kit number did you install?

If you have the split line gearcase - 25 & 30" shaft lengths - you have to use the #5001595 factory kit. If you mistakenly used the 5001594 kit, then you will have lower water pressure and more time required to fill the cylinder block. Believe it or not, many "mechanics" do not know this, or don't want to.

You might want to pull the heads and water jacket and clean the passage ways and make sure there is no buildup of corrosion or debris. Is is simple. The parts might run you $60 -$80 . You will need a torque wrecnh and two head gaskets. That model probably has the big rubber orings around each cylinder and two gaskets for the water jackets. The buildup on the water jackets would look like white powder. Your engine would run cooler.

i dont believe that they are like the crossflow heads.
-
it should be normal for it to take a few seconds, due to trapped air.
the water pump #s are interesting to know.
